The once nondescript facades of Tredworth’s High Street in Gloucester are now bursting with vibrant colors and intricate designs as the first mural of a groundbreaking project is unveiled, igniting a wave of excitement and community spirit.

Led by renowned artist Tash Frootko, in collaboration with a talented team of artists, the ambitious endeavor aims to breathe new life into the heart of Tredworth. With around 170 buildings slated for transformation, including homes, restaurants, shops, and takeaways, the project promises to redefine the landscape of the historic street.

The unveiling of the inaugural artwork sparked what locals described as “chaos” on the street, with a cacophony of car horns and jubilant cheers echoing through the air. Tash Frootko, visibly moved by the overwhelming reception, remarked, “I couldn’t believe how many people loved it. It was like being at a party at rush hour in Gloucester.”

Adding to the allure of the artwork, street artist Nerone highlighted the community’s positive response, particularly emphasizing the enchanting neon words ‘High Street Tredworth,’ which seemed to illuminate the bustling thoroughfare.

This endeavor marks a significant milestone for Frootko, whose previous projects have already left an indelible mark on Gloucester’s urban landscape. However, she asserts that this venture is on an unprecedented scale, dwarfing anything she has undertaken before.

With 12 murals planned along the street, featuring contributions from local, national, and international artists, the project aims to celebrate the multicultural tapestry of Tredworth’s High Street. Frootko envisions the street evolving into a “huge outdoor art gallery,” meticulously depicting the rich history and cultural heritage of the community.

In her pursuit to honor the area’s legacy, Frootko remains committed to preserving the historical integrity of the neighborhood. Original brickwork on homes and businesses will remain untouched, serving as a poignant reminder of Tredworth’s storied past.

Tredworth’s High Street, once perceived as “lost,” now stands on the cusp of a remarkable transformation. Frootko’s vision extends beyond mere aesthetics; she hopes the revitalization will stimulate economic growth, enticing new businesses to set up shop and infusing the area with renewed vitality.

Funded by Gloucestershire County Council’s Levelling Up Together Fund and Arts Council England, the project represents a collaborative effort to invest in the cultural and economic prosperity of the region. Anticipated to span three months, the metamorphosis of Tredworth’s High Street promises to be a testament to the power of art in fostering community cohesion and urban renewal.
